Season # 1 of Luottomies (Wingman). Two neighbours Tommi (Antti Luusuaniemi) and Juhis (Kari Ketonen) are constantly finding themselves in awkward and embarrassing situations. Annoyingly short episodes, but Finnish comedy somewhere close to its finest.

Rise to ride in blood

I didn't remember Michael Fassbender was in it, didn't remember fuck all except that it's seriously bloody and I enjoyed it. Not particularly easy to watch, but such powerful unforgiving brutality that you can't shrug off easily.

Since the dawn of man

Such a terrific thriller. The 1988 Dutch original Spoorloos, also by George Sluizer, was even more harrowing and horrifying than this, but the Hollywood 1993 remake The Vanishing is a masterpiece as well. Jeff Bridges, in one of his rare bad guy roles, is absolutely a sinister villain, and Kiefer Sutherland, Nancy Travis and Sandra Bullock are all brilliant as well. Somewhat a simple story, but nail-biting suspense all the same.

Kinetic nightmare in disguise

Mother and father have some kind of powers, but no such powerful superpowers as their wee little girl Charlie who can breathe fire! She can get any shit ablaze! No wonder a mysterious evil organization is after her to utilize her gift - or curse - to themselves. A pointless remake, an insult to the original and Stephen King's novel. 

In heartbeats and tears

Nordic noir has taken the world by storm. It's everywhere. Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Danish and Icelandic Scandinavian genre of crime fiction. Thanks to the authors (e.g. Jo Nesbø, Henning Mankell, Stieg Larsson, Camilla Läckerg, Jens Lapidus), movies (e.g. The Pusher,  Kraftidioten, A Second Change) and TV-series (e.g. The Killing, The Bridge, Sorjonen, Lilyhammer, Bordertown). Tunna blå linjen (Thin Blue Line), by Cilla Jackert, a series that follows the private and professional struggles of police officers working in the multicultural southern Swedish city of Malmö is the coolest motherfucker out there.

Beneath a vast, indifferent sun

George Clooney and Julia Roberts are great actors and they should be making more movies. So, it's surprising they've wasted time and stuck their talent into this kind of garbage. Or maybe seniles just don't feel the cringe of embarrassment. In Ticket to Paradise they are David and Georgia, divorcees and parents to Kimberley (Arielle Carver-O'Neill) who is getting married in Bali. A predictable, dull and easily skippable romantic comedy.

The theory's perfectly feasible

The superstars of the time - Gregory Peck, Anthony Guinn, David Diven, Anthony Quayle, Irene Papas, Stanley Baker and James Darren - in an epic war movie (directed by J. Lee Thompson). Allied saboteurs are assigned a mission to infiltrate an impregnable nazi-held Greek island and destroy the two enormous long-range field guns. Incredible and fierce war movies done recent times, but they aren't producing such affectionately crafted piece of art any longer.

The king of starless skies

Radio host's wife and daughter are kidnapped. And the heinous fucker has hidden them inside the host's radio station which is boobytrapped with riddles. It was revealed and the twist was obvious right from the start. And even the fucking twist or twists were plotholed. You just sat through stupidly the rest of the movie and maybe thought you'd want to see David Fincher's The Game (1997) instead. Mel Gibson is out of his comfort zone and the rest of the cast is pure rubbish.

Born dead inside

Former mean motherfucker for a cowboy Colter Briggs quiets down for 20 years. Marries, raises a daughter. When his wife is murdered, Colter holds no barriers and his old mean self is back with a vengeance! I wish they had created and developed the other characters in the film as well as Nicolas Cage's gunslinger. A pretty good western nevertheless.

In a world of hurt

Antonio Banderas is Cuda, an ex-convict, a henchman and a debt collector for the mob. But he wants to start his life anew. When one of his few friends is kidnapped, Cuda turns against his former employers. It needs bullets. And it means violence. They churn out this kind of bullshit crime fiction endlessly.

The blade of freedom

A bit pathetic. A needlessly prolonged story of girls becoming invincible Amazons, African warriors. One particularly delicate yet stubborn little woman becomes this resourceful, intelligent and powerful princess who protects her king, her general and tribe to the end. Despite everything, a hollow effort to become a proper adventure or a war movie.

Disappointed in silence

A university student, and a keen runner, has his hobby for good use as the fucking nazis are after him! After the film ended, my first thought was that I probably had seen one of the greatest thrillers ever. The story is a somewhat a compelling jigsaw puzzle at first, but unfolds into a suspenseful, atmospheric and absorbing thriller. A great cast to boot.

Cloaked in their eternal greatness

Name three Matthew Broderick films. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) and Glory (1989). On a good day, Biloxi Blues (1988) is probably picked up. A group of young recruits go through boot camp in Biloxi, Mississippi, and it's fun and games and girls and all the army time clichés. It doesn't even have a potential for anything.

Descent in flames

A mess. It's like a badly produced music album. You can barely hear what the characters are saying because the nondescript music and background noise are too high on the mix. Not that it matters much though. Another one of Bruce Willis's hopeless retirement gigs as, sadly, his dementia is looming on the horizon. I hope we don't have to worry about Frank Grillo and Kevin Dillon next?

The violent and the depraved

The outbreak of the Alvin virus turns people in Taipei into zombielike smiling freaks and sadists who kill and torture people for fun. Reckon, never saw a Taiwanese film before. It's already a strong contender for the most blood-curdling movie of the year. And it's a pretty groovy still!

Prove your worth through courageous acts

Quite like Tony Soprano's Bada Bing in The Sopranos, Plato (Andreas Karras) runs a Greek club The Bezonians. It's a proper place for misfits, gangsters and hookers. Things get particularly heated when he loses 50K in a single poker match. Watchable little thing, but unexciting and never in a million years close to Guy Ritchie's Snatch that it thinks it is.

Death is water's ally

Scandinavian Union, year 72 of New Time. After the Water Wars and the Twilight Century, the World is running out of fresh water. The remaining water is controlled by a military dictatorship. Water criminals are severely punished. Veden vartija, by Saara Saarela, is a Finnish sci-fi movie. A rare breed and it's a decent attempt at that, but a disappointing effort. Some of the shit is almost embarrassing.

I for an eye

Pera (Matti Onnismaa) wants to try something kinky. Teemu Nikki's (Armomurhaaja, Sokea mies joka ei halunnut nähdä Titanicia) 2008 short movie Kaveri is a hilarious cult classic.

Tossed around by the forces of fate

At first, they decided to go with the laconic Aki Kaurismäki route. It backfires. Then it gets weird, just for the sake of being weird. Backfires. The story of a woodcutter who loses practically everything he owns, is not particularly well delivered.

Love in a cold world

Mother is helpless when a whole village thinks her wee little daughter killed her brother by pushing him into a gushing river. The mother, a policewoman by trade, is losing her shit of the malicious gossip and what she thinks she witnessed. Norwegian Storm, by Erika Calmeyer, ain't one of those uplifting stories.

Easier to kill, harder to survive

A soldier is discharged from the army, makes a deal with a private contractor, fucks off to Berlin on a mission, the mission gets compromised and people die. A generic and a bit confusing, but an exciting thriller. The cast includes Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Eddie Marsan and Kiether Sutherland.

Shadows stay in front or behind

A James Bond movie directed by Michael Apted in 1999, starring Pierce Brosnan as the agent 007, Denise Richards as the Bond girl Dr. Christmas Jones, Judi Dench as Bond's superior 'M" (the head of M16), Desmond Llewelyn as 'Q' (the head of Q division) and Robert Carlyle and Sophie Marceau as the main antagonists Renard and Electra King. The theme song performed by Garbage. Europe is about to get destroyed by an oil heiress and an international terrorist who can't feel pain. Luckily, The British Secret Intelligence Service is on the case.

Parked into the light

The Grump wrecks his red 1972 Ford Escort and to find a similar car he travels to Hamburg, Germany. Mielensäpahoittaja Eskorttia etsimässä is a comedy that isn't funny. Directed by Mika Kaurismäki.

Every new discovery is just a reminder we're all small and stupid

This is crazy cool story telling. You don't exactly need to comprehend all the intricacies of the script to succumb in its magic. Everything Everywhere All at Once, by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, is a visually engaging masterpiece. A Chinese immigrant, a laundromat owner, is swept up into an insane and eventful adventure between universes. Haven't seen such a vibrant and energetic movie for a while.

The one who sells ropes

Best movie of the year I've seen thus far. A yacht trip of the super-rich has all the makings of a catastrophe. The eccentric millionaires lives are suddenly turned upside down by alcohol, sea sickness, a Marxian boat captain, a severe storm and pirates. Wickedly funny and entertaining satirical black comedy! Outstanding. Sadly, one of the stars Charlbi Dean died shortly after the film's release. She was 32.

Never underestimate the power of erection

A bloody fucken hoot. An exclusive gourmet club is providing the main course and its five upper-class members try to identity a mystery exotic ingredient. This short movie was an instant classic and its macabre comedy makes you laugh still!

Death is one of poetry's most exalted themes

A gothic thriller packed full of grief, revenge and pinch of occult symbolism. Detective Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) and a cadet Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling) investigate the hanging of another cadet at the United State Military Academy at West Point, New York. A slowly paced thing, but enwrapped in a stunning cinematography and a proper enigmatic story.

It ain't policemanly

Ain't this a fucking crazy story. A prank call that led to a sexual assault. They say nearly all of the events in this movie are true. Fascinating, but sick and weird.

Still following the star

Bend of the River (1952) includes the traditional western features such as indians, gunslingers, card hustlers, settlers, town drunks, heroes and villains. But enough poetic depth and wisdom to keep it all together. And it's a beautiful good-looking film, courtesy of Anthony Mann. Starring James Stewart, Julie Adams, Rock Hudson and Arthur Kennedy.

Forever alone

An Auschwitz survivor Herschel Haft aka. Harry Haft is looking for his girlfriend who was also captured by the nazis. He thinks she doesn't know he's alive, doesn't know Harry lives in New York, but if his name is in the papers, she'd possibly read it. So Harry needs a fight, a good fight, to break the worldwide news. A match against Rocky Marciano would make good publicity. It ain't easy. Harry is a troubled and scarred soul. He boxed against the other jews in win-or-die fights in Auschwitz-Birkenau to survive himself and his past is haunting every second. Finding her lost love might bring at least little comfort. The Survivor, by Barry Levinson, is a heartfelt movie, an arresting story, but pacing of the piece too slow. 

The door that used to open inwards

English kind of bleak that is almost too real. A working glass family - a taxi driver dad, cashier dad and two children - getting by week in week out in a somewhat derelict London housing estate. It's trademark Mike Leigh alright. Excellently written, directed and performed.

Shoveling cowshit in Tuscany

Interesting but hardly leaving a lasting remark. They say it's inspired by the true events that took place in the world famous fashion house and the dynasty known as Gucci. It all comes to a disappointing popcorn of endless chit-chat, little tax fraud and death. They also say that the performances are great, but they aren't really, but the actors, they are aplenty. Including Al Pacino, Salma Hayek, Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto and Jeremy Irons.

Shadow of vernal showers

Absolutely nothing new in the shark movie genre. Bunch of college idiots on jetskis just begging to be devoured by a great white shark. Done a thousand times already.

You don't beat this river

Deliverance, by John Boorman, is a whirlwind of suspense. City folk's canoeing trip going all to shit in the hillbilly territory. It's a timeless classic (from 1972) and the pain and misery almost uncomfortable to watch.

The altar of bones

There's nothing better. Fauda is the greatest series right now. Easily. The news of hearing they're doing the season number four alone and now seeing it. Wow. Blown away. Almost literally.

Let the dreams be real

There's a serial child abductor and murderer nicknamed "The Grabber" at large! A sadistic fuck who kidnaps school children and locks them in the basement of his house. The dungeon has a defunct phone that gives real or imaginary comfort to the locked children. We are lead to believe there's former victims on the other end of the line! A chilling story (courtesy of Joe Hill), but the unexplained bits turn down the thrills a notch.

No-one deserves the impossible

A rodeo horse trainer OJ Haywood (Daniel Kaluuya) is on a UFO hunt! He needs to capture the perfect shot of the object, otherwise no-one believes him. With the help of his sister Emerald Haywood (Keke Palmer), tech salesman Angel Torres (Brandon Perea) and documentarian Antlers Holst (Michael Wincott) he's even going to shoot some proper video evidence. Nope, by Jordan Peele, is a creepy and strangle little thing, but oddly satisfying to watch.

Just a bullet away

Wrong Place, by Mike Burns, is yet another one of Bruce Willis's retirement plans. And again, it's one of those things. You know they are making it seriously, but oftentimes you think are they just fucking with you because it's just too shitty to be true. It's comical, looks like a crime parody, just a shit fucking movie where nothing makes sense.

Ignore the chaos, just keep dancing

Beaches aren't safe because the fucking sand sharks prey on people. The organizers of a beach party aren't too happy, but obviously they overlook the grave danger. Brooke Hogan, the daughter of professional wrestler Hulk Hogan, as the scientist Sandy Powers investigating the great beasts. I've Snow Sharks aka. Avalanche Sharks lined up, I've heard it's even worse.

Man bites man

People are slicing up specimens to understand the concept of a zombie. They are hunting these freaks down for information. Maybe they can be domesticated. It's their only hope because zombies are ruling the earth and humans have to live in bunkers. And they are losing their shit, so the research must pay off. George A. Romero's finest movie of the undead.

A powder keg of explosive rage

Kai is a nomadic soul. A hero and a phenomenon at first, sicko murderer the next. From hero to a cold-blooded callous killer in three months. A documentary of a drifter dude who is a cunt.

Pure motorized instinct

I don't know if zombies should have stayed this way. Down-witted, clumsy and slow as fuck, but I like the idea how the surviving humans have possibilities to fight these monsters. Even having fun while doing it. Why to panic when you are locked safely inside a supermarket and mercilessly fathom its supply from instant coffee, cigarettes, caviar, whisky and ammo? George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead from 1978 is cool, but I prefer Zack Snyder's remake from 2004. 

A family farm

Midway the movie, there was an unexpected twist that made all the difference. Not as exciting as the first one Orphan (2009), but the story is as deranged as they come. And it's pretty bloody.

Bamboo umbrellas for the drinks

Released in 1979, The Jerk is Steve Martin's first starring role in a feature film. His knack for both physical and verbal comedy was so smoothed and charismatic already that he could easily hold up a full-lenght movie on his shoulders. He co-wrote it too. And Carl Reiner, a legend in his own, directed the piece. Sure, some of the humour is quite out-dated, bordering on stupid even, but most of the time a hoot.

Lust for desire

A retired school teacher orders herself a playboy. For sex. The sexworker is Leo Grande. They connect also with talking. It's interesting if you ignite into this kind of thing, but if you don't, it's a boring ordeal. Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack do their bit effortlessly though.

A passing moment of hunting humans

Another one of Bruce Willis's before the retirement gigs. And just like the rest of them, a complete waste of time. Maybe the worst movie of the century. 90 minutes felt like ages. It's not even shit for brains, just hysterically brainless junk.

The fire that burns

Malte has an incurable brain tumor. To avoid future pain and suffering, he thinks active euthanasia is the way to go. He’s accompanied by his friends on an RV journey from Sweden to Switzerland, to complete the assisted suicide thing. It’s both laughter and tears. Dag för Dag (Day by Day) is quite a forgettable Swedish drama comedy. Coincidentally Sven Wollter, the actor portraying the dying man, died before the release of the film from complications caused by COVID-19. The movie remains his last on his remarkable career. He was 86 years old.

Safer to be feared than loved

When the true nature of things are revealed in the end, you fast-forward all the episodes and as much of the scenes you can muster in your mind and realize how disturbing is this shit. There's a serial killer on the loose in a small town of Wind Gap, Missouri. The slaughtered girls eventually get the attention from the FBI and the press and it's a terrifying puzzle or there will be more victims. Marti Noxon's miniseries is close to a masterpiece, based on Gillian Flynn's debut novel.

The cave-man clasps the seer

The owner of an industrial scale company the Blancos Báscules factory, Julio Blanco (Javier Barem) tries to keep the relationships with his family and co-workers and colleagues in balance, just like the product he represents, but it's dancing on a tightrope. El buen patrón (The Good Boss) is a brilliant satire written in a wonderfully sarcastic tone. Directed by Fernando León de Aranoa.

Waking up on the right side of dirt

A young lady woman Kya Clark lives all by herself on a swamp because her bastard father scared the rest of the family away then disappeared himself. She doesn't intend to leave the marsh, not by a long shot, she loves the place, the nature and the animals too much. She also gets attention from the lads in the neighbouring town, so it's all good. Until a body is found. Where the Crawdads Sing, by Olivia Newman, starts out great, quiets down a little too much the rest of the movie, but an intriguing story and enough a gripping drama. Based on a best-seller by Delia Owens.
