Enemies of the state

In the aftermath of WWII, at the height of cold war, the hysteria against communists was the front page news in Hollywood and it divided the tinseltown in two. Several artists (actors, writers, producers et al.) accused of communism stood their ground, so they were blacklisted and subpoenad, and their opinions were fought in the courthouse. Justice system destroyed most of them, but people like screen writer Dalton Trumbo didn't yield an inch and he even ridiculed the shenanigans. Bryan Cranston in a brilliant leading role and the rest of the movie follows suit.

When the buzzing stops

I know fuck all of Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice and don't intend to find out either. Presumably this is a zombie satire of that timepiece. A bunch of posh ladies and noble gentlemen are up against a horde of the undead. Luckily they all excel at mixed martial arts, so that comes quite handy at chopping the heads off. Watchable, but most of the movie is hopelessly pointless drivel.

Fear will keep you alive

In a way, it's like an another take on The Magnificent Seven and Seven Samurai, but there's only three and they are outnumbered badly. However, one of the three is Jane and she is armed to the teeth. A little gunfight follows, a happy ending and all that shite and it's over. Probably Evan McGregor - albeit a small role - at his most miscast part yet.

The streetlights that went out

Nowhere near what I expected. I hardly ever read the synopsis on the DVD cover, so I thought of getting a war movie. Instead I got a slow-moving drama of a widower dad (Gabriel Byrne) and his two sons coping with the death of their wife and mother. Slightly disappointed, but rather nicely they had brought the issue on how one single life (and death) of one person has an impact on several people. And the emptiness within.

Easy is boring

Probably the stupidest movie I've seen all year. Just terribly bad. Those two in the lead - Kellan Lutz and Gina Carano - can't think of a more untalented actors right now.

The cost of war

The US and UK intelligence agencies are spying on bad people in Kenya using high-tech drones. A while back there was Good Kill, remarkably similar in story. They are following terrorists from the safety of their chairs and blowing them to kingdom come. There's some political and moral dilemmas to deal with as well. Good thrilling stuff. Sadly, Alan Rickman's - wonderful actor - last work.

Like a pair on panpipes

I understand why this one was heavily criticized. It's fucking vulgar and infantile, downright offensive perhaps, but I laughed my tits off.

Cosmogonic myth

Ville Haapasalo's 2012 production delves into Finno-Ugric peoples in Russia. They, particularly their culture and language, are on the verge of extinction, so this wasn't too uplifting a travel series. And the production team was constantly chaperoned by the Russian authorities, so that made it even more ludicrous.

We have always been criminals

To tell the truth, half the time I didn't know what the fuck was going on. It was, particularly at the beginning, too fast paced, but I gathered that the b-man and s-man are in the same city, as is Lex Luthor with his fucking kryptonite, and everyone is measuring their dicks. In the end, I liked Ben Affleck as the Dark Knight though, Superman however is a bit of a wimp and Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor is colourless, odourless and tasteless because Jesse Eisenberg.

On the devil's hour

A Heavy Metal band Deathgasm invokes the demons from hell by finding a music sheet ("Black Hymn") including the notes of actual devil music. A funny little horror comedy bit from New Zealand, reminiscences of Peter Jackson's Braindead.

Loss of freedom literally and symbolically

University pays a bunch of students to act as either prisoners or wardens in a makeshift prison. In the simulated environment researchers intend to find out something important of human behaviour and psychology of imprisonment. This actually took place at Standford University in 1971, but I'm afraid, the movie is tedious as shit.

Doomed men ride out

Always loved a good western and this is one of the best movies of the year. And even if this seemingly is a very traditional western movie - and darn good at that - it includes almost modern horror movie qualities in a smooth and stylish way. Earns a new cult classic status.

Twerking medievally

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is about this guy Greg and his friends Earl and Rachel, the latter of whom is dying of cancer. It's kind of sophisticated drama, with toe-to-toe serious and comedic undertones, that you can't but like really, but on the other hand, it's what it is: a piece of average film that you forget so very easily.

The bottom of the hole

Boisterous life of French drug smugglers in the mid-seventies and there's also the undercover cops a few steps behind. The entire drug war - based on a true story, I'm told - was heavily personified on two people on both side of the fence; judge Pierre Michel (Jean Dujardin) and the head of mafia Gaëtan 'Tany' Zampa (Gilles Lellouche). And that brought reminiscences of the great Heat (Michael Mann). Nicely executed film.

Never set fire to your own house

A documentary of Swedish football phenomenon Zlatan Ibrahimovich. This was about his early years in Malmö FF, Ajax and Juventus. A bit dull to be honest, not enough controversy, cool stories, not much of anything.

Friends don't lie

Fucking like proper mysteries and I gotta jump on the bandwagon on this one, because it is very fucking good. Liked it a lot how they had snipped the general atmosphere and all the great tidbits from traditional horror and science fiction scares such as The Thing, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Alien and most of the Stephen King novels.

Connecting the dots that are not there

They never learn, do they? On Homefront, bunch of redneck hillbillies fronted by James Franco and a platoon of outlaw bikers learn it through the hard way that you should never mess up with Jason Statham.

Road to truth has many turns

A German terrorist Simon ( Jeremy Irons ) is in New York City and he plans to rob the Federal Reserve Building. John McClane ( Bruce Willis ...
