All the signs of a psycho killer

A slasher Groundhog Day. A college student Tree is stuck in her birthday where at the end of the day she is murdered. While dealing with the situation, after flipping out a few times, she has time and patience to figure out who has the motive to kill her and how to solve the ghastly dilemma. But to do that she has to die a few times. Curious enough a horror comedy flick and, must say, damn entertaining to watch.

Somewhere between shit and syphilis

I had time to think what could be the best firefighter movie of all time because this was so utterly boring in the beginning and halfway. Came up with Towering Inferno (1974) and Backdraft (1991), both decent not great. Only The Brave is based on a true story and - I'm sure - out of respect for the dead they put an effort on building up the characters, thence it dragged along. Yarnell Hill Fire ignited on June 28, 2013 and killed 19 elite firefighters. Terrible tragedy.

The god of hammers

Thor is up against his own sister, Odin's firstborn and the goddess of death Hela, who as a proof of her power destroys the indestructible hammer of Thor and countinues bounding Asgard (home of the nordic gods) to smithereens. This probably is the best movie in the franchise, it's darn funny with surprisingly fresh humour, loads of unforgettable characters and it looks absolutely spot on.

No friends, only interests

'The New York stock market has crashed and the whole western world has drifted into economic depression and mass unemployment. Stalin has invited the working people of the world to help built the Soviet Union, a workers' paradise. More than 10,000 people have left the United States and Canada hoping for a better life in the promised land. More than 6,000 of them are American Finns. This is their story.' Thus the award-winning movie begins. One of the unlucky ones in the story is Jussi Ketola who after a stint in the United States settles back to Finland with his family, but after almost being killed by fascist Finns wakes up in Russia and is forcefully being told to spy the Americans in Russia. The family loving pacifist is neck deep in commie paranoia and he only wants to go back home. Years go by and the Russian persecution grows stronger, ending up in horrifying circumstances. I understand that the film was well received, Tommi Korpela as Jussi Mäki is one of the best acting performances in Finnish cinema and it's directed to almost perfection. The lack of authentism is the only pitfall, I was never swallowed into the story living the pain and suffering of the characters, it was rather emotionless in that sense.

A medium dry martini, lemon peel, shaken, not stirred

The first James Bond film, directed by Terence Young in 1962, starring Sean Connery as the agent 007, Ursula Andress as the Bond girl Honey Ryder, Bernard Lee as Bond's superior M (the head of MI6), Desmond Llewelyn as Boothroyd or 'Q' (the head of Q division)Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny (MI6 secretary) and Joseph Wiseman as Dr. No, the main antagonist. James Bond investigates the death of fellow agent and his secretary in Jamaica, leading him to hunt down a crimininal scientist from the organization SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion) who wants to disrupt American space launch. The movie has stood remarkably well the test of time, it's no surprise that it's a little naive, but in the end it only makes it better.

Another thing coming

I guess Britain's Brokeback Mountain doesn't cut it and perhaps ain't fair, but don't give a damn. This is more in your face and it has the British characteristics; the bleakness, the dryness and the hopelessness. It's muddy and rainy, engulfed in greyness. Essentially, by the looks of it, opposite to everything in its Hollywood counterpart. Even if they are both critically acclaimed, I think they are absolutely nothing special.

Saving the best bits of the planet

2019. The world is fucked, the climate change is real, we'd either be roasted or freezed to death if it wasn't for an international space station Dutchboy that controls the weather. When Dutchboy malfunctions or is sabotaged we send in one of our best, a little renegade scientist (Gerald Butler) to solve matters of live and death, to save the planet from extinction. He is the hero in the silliest catastrophe movie for a decade. Good fun though.

Mercy prevails over wrath

Season 8 of The Walking Dead. It started out miserably, once again I almost gave up hope and contemplated of not following the series any longer. Thankfully, it got better towards the end and I'm somewhat interested what happens to Rick and Negan and Michonne and all the others in the following season.

A sideshow attraction

Jeffrey Dahmer (1960-1994) was one of the most notorious serial killers with at least 17 deaths to his name. My Friend Dahmer focuses on the early years when he was in high school and began to develop a taste for men, booze and murder. Before shit hit the fan.

There's nothing wrong with little quiet

The guy is called Baby and he's a getaway driver. He's suffering from tinnitus, so to cover a ringing sound he listens to music all the time. And this makes the movie a heist musical and can't say it works. Not that the music is bad though. The ludicrous story is shit and all the characters are annoying; the fucking babyface driver, the mob boss fucking Kevin Spacey, the macho dickheads played by Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx. Rubbish.

Holding the end of your own leash

The Watergate scandal has been scrutinized and filmed to hell and back. The Secret Man takes a look from FBI's debuty associate director Mark Felt's standpoint as he has 48 hours to wrap out the Watergate investigation. The man knows everything and ain't afraid to wage political war. Liam Neeson is excellent as the whistleblower or deep throat or whatever he was called, as are everyone else, amazingly strong cast of not-so-often-seen but strict acting professionals (Tony Goldwyn, Diane Lane, Josh Lucas) and the movie looks solid. Too bad the shit gnaws the old bone.

Decimating the eco-system

It is painful to watch documentaries of global warming because you know it's there and no one seems to be doing anything about it. This one is one of the better ones on the field, at least it seems it got a little more weight getting Leonardo DiCaprio to host it and he manages to interview pretty powerful and wise people; from world known scientists (Piers Sellers) to enterpreneurs (Elon Musk) and politicians (Barack Obama) and holy men (Pope Francis). The people who would truly make a difference - the people at the other side of the fence - are absent because they know the truth and choose to lie. I'm not the worst doomsday prophet because I feel there still is a glimmer of hope, but the people who don't believe in global warming are idiots.

Screw on your fists and fight for a fortune

An Iranian movie of a common people Emad and Rana moving to a new apartment previously occupied by a prostitute. It's great film making, there's not too much in there, in the story, but all the drama and tension are built in stupefying manner.

Doomsday protocol

Kingsmen face an extremely ruthless kingpin who holds global monopole of drug trafficking. Once again, it's action at an another level. It's a bit too violent for a comedy, but it's still rather funny though. But can't beat the predecessor, no way, it's too long, the characters and cameos are overdone, the story is ludicrous and overblown rubbish. Lots of money wasted, however it's still entertaining.

Cure evil with evil

A wealthy businessman Aristide Leonides is murdered in his own mansion and the people living under the same roof (family & hired hands) are all under suspicion. Everyone could have done it, they all had means and opportunities. They could have been motivated either by anger, jeolousy, love or creed. Young investigator has couple of days to find and arrest the murderer before Scotland Yard burst through the door. Trademark Agatha Christie, and I have always liked a proper mystery, but this one is a bit too slow and boring in its development.

All this and more

A stand-up comedian struggles to co-parent his autistic son. A simple story, seen many times before, but solid and entertaining little flick...
